The St. Catharines Falcons have taken a 2-1 series lead over the Ancaster Avalanche in the Second Round of the GOJHL Golden Horseshoe Playoffs.
Captain Tyler MacArthur lead the way for the Falcons in their 5-1 win over the visiting Avalanche Tuesday at the Jack Gatecliff arena with a goal and an assist.
Falcons goaltender Owen Savory turned away all but one of the 34 shots he faced while his Avalanche counterpart Tanner Sheppard allowed five goals on 24 St. Catharines attempts.
A strong performance from the Falcons penalty kill helped them maintain their early lead. Ancaster scored just once on 12 power-play opportunities. Mirroring their other special team, the Falcons power-play also looked strong, capitalizing on two of seven chances with the extra-man.
Forward Michael Davies opened the scoring for the Falcons in the first period, ripping a shot past the Ancaster goalie on the power-play. MacArthur and forward Dakota Miskolczi both added even strength goals before the end of the opening frame.
Bursting with speed while killing a penalty, forward Zach Lawrence added the lone goal for either team in the second period. Lawrence was later ejected from the game for a game misconduct.
Both teams traded power-play goals in the third period with Falcons forward Jaleel Adams and Avs forward Benjamin Hatanaka each burying with the extra man.
St. Catharines will look to take a 3-1 lead on Wednesday night when they take on the Avalanche on the road at the Morgan Firestone Arena in Ancaster at 7pm.
